History of Sunrooms

It is common belief that sunrooms as we know them today were first constructed in Italy during the 16th century. Back then, they were referred to as giardini botanici which translates to botanic gardens. This clearly indicates that sunrooms then were used to house exotic tropical plants that were brought back into Italy by explorers.

Several years later and throughout the centuries, sunroom use became popular with the nearby countries and sooner rather than later the entire European continent was filled with sunrooms.  As years went by it was noted that sunrooms proved to add value into the human health and they were then created for human use.

They were given the name solaria coined from the Latin word, Sol, meaning the sun. Sunrooms were built on homes and they consisted mainly of three walls of windows that were almost complete beginning from the floor to the ceiling.

Solaria (sunrooms) became a common feature in hospitals and they were used as places where patients would sit and focus in recovering from illnesses. Whether the patient suffered from a terrible cold, pneumonia or tuberculosis, doctors often advised patients to spend quality time in these rooms as often as they could.  Count on the experts at Carolina Home Exteriors for the best prices?  Save money and time.  Carolina Home Exteriors is a Licensed Home Improvement Contractor.

Even at home those who were in good health couldn’t keep away from basking in the warmth of the sunlight which bathed an entire room. Advantages that sunrooms provided in collecting sun rays for purposes of home heating were obvious.

The advent of the double paned sunroom started back in the 1970s decade turned the sunroom into an energy efficient room that harnessed the energy from the sun and it could be solar powered for use in the home or in the sunroom during night time to heat it up when temperatures lowered.

Solariums are still common features in a section of modern hospitals; the sunroom is still vogue in all styles and home sizes. For homes that are very big and feature sunrooms, the rooms are known as atrium or a Florida room.
